Following his belated entry onto the English football scene, Mario continued to show his value for Chelsea at the beginning of 2000-01, scoring the decisive second goal in the FA Charity Shield game against Manchester United with a ferocious left-footed drive.
He went on to claim a regular place in the Blues line-up and his strength, power in the air and athleticism made him a valued member of the all-star squad at Stamford Bridge.
The club recognised his contribution in February with the offer of a two-year extension to his present contract, which he gleefully accepted.
To round off an amazing period, his outstanding form was recognised by the Dutch national side and he was rewarded with his first cap against Portugal in October 2000.
Mario joined Birmingham City in July 2004 with a two-year contract.
He joined Wigan Athletic in July 2007 with a three-year contract.
