A powerful central midfield player with the ability to spray passes around the pitch, he began in the domestic league in Cameroon playing for Canon Yaounde and he made his name with Lens where he was a member of the team that won their first French League title in 1997-98 under Gerard Houllier. He received mixed reviews during his subsequent spell in the Premiership with West Ham United before returning to France with Lyon in the 2000 close season. He was rated at £6million as Frederic Kanoute moved in the opposite direction. He suffered a bout of Malaria in 2000 but recovered to lead the team to the French Championship.
A veteran of three African Nations Cup finals and of the 1994 World Cup (he was absent with a broken leg in 1998), Marc-Vivien, who is one of the Indomitable Lions' more experienced players. He missed France '98 with a broken leg, an injury that also put a block on an anticipated move to Manchester United. He netted three times from six appearances during the qualifying rounds for Japan and South Korea and was a key player finals. Kevin Keegan swooped to lure him from the promise of Champions League football to play in the Premiership for Manchester City, taking him on an initial one year loan deal with the option of making the contract a permanent one in June 2003.
Marc-Vivien tragically died on 26 June 2003 after collapsing in the Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia.
