Matthews was a tall striker who was quick and had a good first touch.
Having developed through the ranks at Leeds United, he joined Second Division Bristol City on loan in March 2001 and the deal became permanent shortly afterwards.
His career at Ashton Gate got off to a great start when he netted a last-minute winner from the penalty spot against Millwall and he scored again in his second game as the Robins won 3-1 at Reading.
Matthews was transfer listed at the end of the 2001-02 season.
He joined Crewe Alexandra in August 2006 with a one-year contract.
