Cartwright began his long career at Preston North End when he joined the club as a YTS trainee in 1990.
He made his league debut while still a trainee in February 1991 against Huddersfield Town and signed professional forms in July 1991.
He was a virtual ever present until a knee injury suffered in Febraury 1996 ruled him out for a year.
He had played enough to pick up a Division Three championship medal at the end of the 1995-96 season.
The next few seasons were a struggle against injury and he appeared only sporadically but did become the first player since the 1980's to make 250 league and 300 career appearances for the club in the 1998-1999 sesason.
He signed a new deal in the summer of 1999 but was ruled out by another injury at the start of the season, and after forcing his way back into first team action, he was forced to have a cartilage operation which curtailed his appearances for the side, but he did make enough appearances to win the Second Division championship medal.
Another knee operation during the summer of 2000 meant Preston's longest serving player missed the start of season, and it was not until mid-September that Cartwright made his first league appearance for North End.
Cartwright joined Stockport County in January 2004 with a 18-month contract.
He then joined Rochdale in a one-year deal.
