Sigurdsson was still fighting his way back from a serious injury to his right knee at the start of 2000-01 and once fit he found it difficult to win his place back in the West Bromwich Albion team. Biding his time, he eventually returned from the subs' bench in the 1-0 win at Bolton Wanderers in December but it was not until the end of February that he made the first-team squad on a regular basis. A rugged defender who can appear on the right-hand side or in a more central role he also won a recall to the Iceland national team before the end of the campaign.
Sigurdsson announced his retirement in December 2004 due to a knee injury.
