Brown found his first-team opportunities at Barnsley very limited at the start of the 2000-01 season, and after making just a single appearance against Birmingham at the end of August he joined Oxford United for a two-month loan period. He performed consistently well at left back during his stay at the Manor Ground, helping the U's to back-to-back wins in his first two games. On his return to Oakwell he was made reserve team captain and did a good job bringing on the youngsters coming up from the academy. A versatile defender who can play either in central defence or at left back he reads the game well and is strong in the tackle.
