He started his career in the former East Germany at Kickers Emden before signing for Bundesliga side Freiburg in 1994. He joined Borussia Dortmund in January 1996 for £ 1.2 million and quickly established himself as a regular winning the European Cup in 1997. He made his German debut just before the 1998 World Cup Finals and started in all their matches in France. He moved to Fiorentina in Italy after the Finals but could not settle and moved back to Germany rejoining Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2000. He failed to make the 2000 European Championship Finals squad but has forced his way back onto the international scene with his excellent club performances. A recent ligament injury has restricted his club performances but he has recovered in time for the World Cup Finals. A versatile performer able to play in any of the defensive positions, but mainly plays on the left hand side of a back three or as the left wing back where his pace, work rate, excellent crossing and shooting make him a danger. He may play from the bench and if he does he will not let his country down.
