Thompson scored 25 goals in 30 games in his first season with Chelsea and was then dropped. He insisted on being allowed to leave any club he joined on a free transfer and also on always wearing the same pair of boots. He returned to Chelsea as a scout and it was he who spotted Jimmy Greaves.
