James emerged as one of several promising youngsters at Cardiff City in 2000-01 making his senior debut when he came off the subs' bench to replace Robbie Earnshaw in the closing minutes of the FA cup first round tie against Bristol Rovers.
James is a strong central defender who has also been switched to play as a striker. He was capped for Wales at Under-17 and Under-18 levels during the 2000-01 season.
James' contract at Cardiff City was extended to June 2008 in January 2005.
He joined West Ham United with his Cardiff colleague Danny Gabbidon for a combined fee of £3million.
