Smith was a quick, two-footed centre-forward arrived who proved to be an excellent signing from Huddersfield Town whilst still a teenager. His scoring rate ranks highly amongst the revered Newcastle marksmen and his sale to Manchester United did not go down well on the Gallowgate terraces. Leading scorer for Manchester United during WW2 (160 goals). He also played as a war guest for Blackburn Rovers, Burnley and Liverpool.
