Crespo rose to fame with River Plate where he was a member of the team that won the Apertura championship, the Liga Pan-Americana and the Copa Libertadores, as well as winning a silver medal in the Atalanta Olympic Games in 1996.
He joined River Plate as a 13 year-old and made his senior debut in 1993.
In his second season, he was named 'Champion of the Campeonato Apertura' and earned the nickname 'Valdanito' due to his similarities to Jorge Valdano.
1996 also saw Crespo move to Parma where he continued to impress and earned winners' medals for the UEFA Cup and Italian Cup in 1999.
In the 2000 close season, Crespo joined Lazio for £12 million fee plus Sergio Cerceicao and Matias Almeyda - bringing the deal to a record £35.5 million. He promptly finished leading scorer in Serie A with 26 goals in his first campaign for his new club.
In the summer of 2003, he left Italy to join Chelsea in a five-year deal for £16.8 million. He spent the 2004-05 season on loan at AC Milan.
Crespo scored Argentina's opening goal of the 2006 World Cup finals. It came in a 2-1 win against Ivory Coast with his Chelsea team-mate Didier Drogba scoring for the Ivorians.
He then scored Argentina's fourth goal in the 6-0 defeat of Serbia & Montenegro in their second Group C game.
In the Round of 16 2-1 win against Mexico, FIFA credited Argentina's second goal to Crespo though video analysis strongly suggested that Jared Borgetti headed into his own net.
Crespo joined Inter in August 2006 in a two-season loan deal.
