Butt began his career at Second Division TSV Grossenkneten and Vfb Oldenburg before moving to the Bundesliga with Hamburg in 1997.

He did make his international debut in June 2000 against Liechtenstein.
At club level, he moved to Bayer Leverkusen in the close season of 2001.
He is a good shot-stopper possessing great reflexes and is known to take Bayer Leverkusen's penalties scoring nine in one season (he scored 18 in his career at Hamburg).
