Full name is: Gilberto Aparecido da Silva.
The tough defensive midfielder had become a World Cup winner with Brazil in Japan prior to his move to Arsenal in 2002.
A newcomer to the highest levels of Brazilian football following his transfer to Atletico Mineiro, Gilberto's progress culminated in his selection for the first preparation match of 2002.
He responded with two goals against Bolivia.
Although he has notable attacking skills and is a good passer, it was his qualities as a tough defensive midfielder that attracted Luiz Felipe Scolari.
Gilberto received a late call up to Brazil's starting line up for their opener in the 2002 World Cup finals against Turkey after captain Emerson dislocated his shoulder in training.
He played in all of Brazil's games, including the Final against Germany in Yokohama.
Gilberto's contract at Arsenal was extended to June 2009 in September 2005.
