McGowan's seven appearances for Arsenal spanned a period of five years before he enjoyed more action at Luton Town.
McGowan clocked up 77 first team appearances for Arsenal (7) and Luton Town (70).
A former England youth and schoolboy international, he suffered an ankle injury shortly before the start of the 2000-01 campaign and, although he returned to action briefly at the end of September, the problem flared up again and as a result he had few first-team opportunities at Luton.
A hard working full back who is strong in the tackle and can operate on either flank, he was one of five players released by new boss Joe Kinnear at the end of April.
