Gary Speed

The Premier League's appearances record holder for an outfield player prior to being superseded by Ryan Giggs, he is the ultimate model professional.

Gary was described by Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd as his 'favourite player'. Awarded an MBE in 2010.

Once again, Gary proved highly influential in midfield for Newcastle United in 2000-01.

Always comfortable on the ball, he was often employed as a playmaker in Rob Lee's absence although when Lee was in the side he tended to play in a more attacking role, making bursting runs though into advanced positions.

His aerial ability made him a constant threat at set pieces, and he again claimed his share of goals.

He also worked hard for the team, and could always be relied upon to track back and help out his defence when they were under pressure.

Gary was a regular in the Wales team, proudly serving his country as captain, and scored in the World Cup qualifying game in Belarus in September 2000.

Gary joined Bolton Wanderers in July 2004 with a two-year contract that was extended to June 2007 in August 2005, then to June 2008 in August 2006.

He joined Sheffield United in January 2008 with a contract to June 2009.
