Such was his promise that Gary O'Neil made his debut against Barnsley in January 2000 while still a trainee.
That appearance also made him the youngest ever player to appear for Portsmouth (16 years,256 days).
He signed professional forms in June 2000 and made steady progress in 2000-01 despite missing a large part of the season after knee surgery and breaking a bone in his right foot.
He scored his first goal in the match against Barnsley and won England Under-17 and Under-19 honours and attracted the attention of several Premiership clubs and was been given a £4million price tag.
Gary's contract at Portsmouth was extended to June 2011 in July 2006.
His contract at Middlesbrough was extended to June 2012 in December 2009.
He joined Norwich City in August 2014 with a two-year contract.
Gary joined Bristol City in July 2016 with a two-year contract.
