Charles replaced Davor Suker at half time in the first home Premiership game of the season against Leicester but that was the extent of his first-team football for West Ham in 2000-01. In September he joined Birmingham City on loan but after making his debut in a 1-1 draw against rivals West Bromwich Albion he was affected by hamstring problems and was in and out of the side. He subsequently featured regularly for the Hammers' reserves but was hampered by a number of niggling injuries. An experienced right back or wing back his strengths are his speed and crossing. He was forced to retire in the summer of 2002 with injury.
