After being released by Notts County in May 2000, Fran had trials with Altrincham and Chesterfield before joining Unibond League club Witton Albion. He subsequently returned to the Football League later in the autumn when he signed non-contract forms for Exeter City.
His career at St James Park got off to a great start when he scored just seven minutes into his debut against Scunthorpe United but shortly after appearing in the 6-1 New Year's Day mauling by Cardiff City, he returned to Witton.
Fran was made available for transfer by Doncaster Rovers in November 2004 but he announced his retirement from senior football a month later due to a knee injury.
