Diouf performed superbly in the 2002 World Cup for Senegal to help them to the Quarter-Finals and secure a five-year contract with Liverpool.
His first season at Anfield saw the Reds triumph in the Worthington Cup Final against Manchester United.
An enthusiastic performer, he began his career with Sochaux in the 1998-99 season as a 17 year-old.
His talent was soon spotted by Rennes were he played for a season before signing for Lens in the 2000 close season.
His second season at Stade Felix-Bollaert saw Lens finish as runners-up to Lyon in the Championnat.
Despite his early career being blighted by discipline problems, he was called into the national squad making his debut in the World Cup qualifying match against Benin in April 2000 where he made an immediate impact with a successful partnership with Pape Thiaw.
He was the top scorer in qualification and managed two hat-tricks against Algeria and Libya.
His achievements were recognised by being named African Footballer of the Year in 2001 and 2002 and earned the nickname the 'Serial Killer'.
Diouf is much more than just a goalscorer.
His intelligent running with or without the ball stretches most defences he plays against.
After a loan spell, Diouf joined Bolton Wanderers in June 2005 with a four-year contract.
He joined Doncaster Rovers in October 2011 with a three-month contract that was extended to June 2012 in January 2012.
Diouf joined Leeds United in August 2012 on non-contract terms before agreeing a deal to January 2013 that was extended to June 2014 in December 2012.
