Novak is a hard-working midfielder who normally operates on the right-hand side of midfield. Like several of his international colleagues he has played throughout Europe, switching clubs regularly. He started at Olimpija Ljubljana before moving to Partizan Belgrade in 1990. He made his international debut for Yugoslavia against Italy in August 1991 and then he moved clubs to play for Fenerbache in Turkey before he returned home to Olimpija Ljubljana in December 1993. He stayed for three seasons before he left for Le Havre in the close season of 1996 and moved again in July 1999 to NK Domzale. He could not settle and left for Sedan in France on loan in November 1999. Most recently he joined Bundesliga outfit SpVgg Unterhaching in October 2000 but was unable to prevent them from being relegated at the end of the 2000-2001 campaign. He won four caps for Yugoslavia and following the break up of the country he subsequently opted to play for Slovenia and has been a regular in the squad over the last decade. He is a definite starter on the right hand side of midfield.
