Sturridge struggled to win a regular place in the Derby County line-up in 2000-01 and featured almost exclusively as a substitute.
He managed just a single goal - a header in the 2-2 draw at Everton in August - and eventually moved on to Leicester City as boss Peter Taylor sought to boost his strike force.
His experience proved of particular value in bringing along Ade Akinbiyi, while he showed that he had lost none of his predatory skills by scoring on three successive Saturdays in February, twice from close range and once with a neat looping header against Sunderland.
He also came close to scoring in the FA Cup tie against Wycombe Wanderers, but on this occasion his effort was disallowed.
With the benefit of hindsight, it is possible to earmark that moment as potentially the one that dramatically altered the course of the Foxes' entire season.
Unusually, a chest injury put him out of first-team action in April.
Sturridge joined Queens Park Rangers in March 2005 with a contract to June 2006.
