Delaney was second-choice keeper to Mark Goodlad at Port Vale in 2000-01 and received few opportunities due to the fine form of his rival. He made his senior debut at Wrexham on Boxing Day when he came on from the subs' bench in the final minute after Goodlad had received a red card and also featured on a number of occasions towards the end of the campaign. Delaney continued to represent the Republic of Ireland at Under-21 level winning further caps against Netherlands and Portugal.
Delaney signed a new one-year contract with Port Vale in May 2003.
