Thompson was a crowd favourite at Liverpool due to his total commitment, but he never established himself as a regular first teamer.
Thompson was seen as a major capture for Coventry City when he signed in the summer of 2000 but 2000-01 proved to be a rather frustrating season for him.
Injury and suspension meant that he didn't become a regular in the team until early November, but his performances were then excellent, with his all-action style and skills on the ball winning favour with the fans.
On his return to Liverpool, he got a warm reception from the Anfield crowd and scored a stunning goal from all of 25 yards.
He was also on the scoresheet against Southampton with a curling free-kick that deceived everyone.
However after Christmas his performances stuttered a little and he was dropped after the Tottenham Hotspur away game, but returned at Manchester United with a more disciplined display.
Thompson joined Portsmouth in July 2006 with a one-year contract.
He joined Bolton Wanderers in January 2007 with a contract to the end of the season.
