McNiven joined York City in August 2000 and netted a number of crucial goals in the first half of the season.
However the goals seemed to dry up in the New Year when his formed dipped a little.
Nevertheless, he finished the 2000-2001 campaign as top scorer for the Minstermen with ten goals.
At his best, he is a lively forward with good pace and an eye for goal.
McNiven is the twin brother of fellow Morecambe player Scott McNiven, and the son of former Bradford City star McNiven McNiven.
