David Luiz

Full name is: David Luiz Moreira Marinho.

David Luiz is primarily used as a central defender, although his attacking instincts and abilities as a passer of the ball, dribbler and goal scorer means he can often be seen wandering upfield.

After playing for Sao Paulo FC during his youth career, he began his senior career at Vitoria before moving on to Benfica, where he stayed for five seasons until he joined Chelsea in January 2011.

David Luiz joined Paris St Germain in June 2014 for a world record fee for a defender of £50 million.

He made his official debut for Vitoria in 2006, in game against Santa Cruz Futebol in the Brazilian Cup.

On 30 January 2007, David Luiz joined Benfica on loan, making his debut in a UEFA Cup match against Paris St Germain and then playing his first league match for Benfica, against Uniao de Leiria in March.

He signed a five year deal and was everpresent in the 2009-10 season, as Benfica won the league and he won the Portuguese Liga Player of the Year.

On 30 January 2011, David Luiz joined Chelsea (for a reported £25 million on a five-and-a-half-year contract.

He made his Chelsea debut on 6 February against Liverpool and scored his first goal (against Manchester United) on 1 March.

David Luiz recovered from a knee injury to play for Chelsea in the Champions League final, converting his penalty as Chelsea won the shootout.

On 22 September 2012, he signed a new five-year contract with Chelsea but on 13 June 2014 he officially moved to Paris St Germain.

David Luiz re-joined Chelsea in August 2016 with a three-year contract for a reported fee of £34million.

His contract with the Blues was extended to June 2021 in May 2019.

He joined Arsenal in August 2019 with a two-year contract.

International career

David Luiz played for Brazil's under-20 team at the World Cup in 2007before making his senior debut in a 2-0 friendly win against the United States on 10 August 2010. He was unable to play in the Copa America in 2011 due to injury but went on to captain Brazil for the first time on 7 September 2012 in a 1-0 win against South Africa in Sao Paulo.

David Luiz helped Brazil to victory in the Confederations Cup in 2013 and was named in Brazil's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, scoring his first international goal in the 1-1 draw against Chile in the round of 16.

He also scored in the penalty shoot-out which took Brazil thorough to the quarter-finals.
