Barnard never really broke into the Chelsea first team on a regular basis but went on to be a regular at Bristol City, Barnsley and Grimsby Town as well as earning 22 caps for Wales.
Barnard sometimes struggled to find his best form for Barnsley in 2000-01 although his season was badly disrupted by a knee injury that kept him out of action from the end of December until late February.
Asked to play on the left side of a midfield four, he nevertheless often showed that he had one of the best left feet in the First Division and his passing and crossing remained of a high standard.
Once he had returned to fitness, he also won a recall to the Wales international team.
Barnard joined Grimsby Town on a two-year contract in August 2002.
