Hay was pushed forward ahead of schedule due to the injury crisis at Elland Road and made his senior debut for Leeds United when he came off the substitutes' bench in the final minute to replace Lucas Radebe in the Champions' League game in Barcelona. He remained in the first-team picture, and again substituted for the injured Radebe, at half-time in the 4-2 home win over Tottenham when he had an inspired 45 minutes, looking solid and adept at bringing the ball out of defence. He made three more appearances for the first team before returning to the reserves where he played regularly for the remainder of the campaign. A New Zealand international central defender he missed out on their World Cup qualifying matches due to a nagging groin injury.
Hay agreed a new one-year contract with Walsall in August 2003 but this was cancelled in December 2003 when he returned to New Zealand.
