Edwards made his debut in senior football for Southend United in the LDV Vans Trophy tie with Cheltenham and also came on from the subs' bench in the final game of 2000-01 against Mansfield. A young midfield player he faced a difficult task to win a regular place in the Blues first team in 2001-02 and decided to join Grays Athletic.
