Sutton first shot to fame at Norwich City where he proved to be equally adept as both a central defender and a striker.

He was sold to Blackburn Rovers for £5million in the summer of 1994 and subsequently partnered Alan Shearer up front as Rovers won the Premiership title in 1994-95.

He later had a disappointing season at Chelsea before becoming Martin O'Neill's first signing for Celtic at a cost of £6million in July 2000.

That fee proved a valuable investment as the Parkhead club went on to win a domestic treble in 2000-01.

Sutton joined Birmingham City in January 2006 with a contract to the end of the season.

He followed Martin O'Neill to Aston Villa in October 2006 with a contract to June 2007.

Sutton announced his retirement in July 2007 due to an eye injury.
