A long-term target of Sir Bobby Robson, the Newcastle United boss had departed the St James' Park scene before Charles' protracted transfer was completed.
His early displays showed why his signature was so sought after.
Charles' contract was extended to June 2012 in September 2007.
He joined Wigan Athletic in February 2009 with a contract to June 2012.
Charles joined Aston Villa in July 2011 with a five-year contract.
