One of several promising youngsters to emerge from Barnsley's youth scheme in recent seasons, Carl made his senior debut for the Tykes against Gillingham and made his mark by winning the penalty that put the Tykes on the road to victory. He went on to make a handful more appearances. A tricky winger with the ability to beat defenders and deliver a telling cross, he is the son of the former Barnsley and Newcastle player Stewart Barrowclough.
Carl was released by Barnsley in September 2003.
