Deane, who scored the first-ever goal in the Premiership, struggled again with illness and injuries at Middlesbrough in 2000-01 and a tally of two goals from 13 starts was never likely to set the Tees alight although the fans could be forgiven for demanding more. The inspirational striker would move heaven and earth to regain his scoring rate when he gets back in the groove, but it was a long hard slog for him last term. An experienced striker who is particularly effective in the air he possesses a powerful shot.

Deane joined West Ham United with a contract to the end of the season in October 2003. He returned to Leeds United in July 2004 with a one-year contract before joining Sunderland in March 2005 with a contract to then end of the season. Deane returned to Sheffield United in January 2006 with a contract to the end of the season.
