McOwen was The Reds' first ever goalkeeper in the League playing against Middlesbrough Ironopolis on 2nd September 1893. He also had the honour of being the youngest goalkeeper, aged 15, whilst previously playing for Blackburn in the league.

McOwen also played for Cherry Tree, Blackburn Olympic (both amateur),.
