Along with third-choice keeper Franky Vandendriessche, Bernd is one of two uncapped players selected for Belgium's 23 in Japan and South Korea. He made his senior debut for Wellense before moving to Standard Liege in 1995. He joined RC Genk five years later, and his World Cup hopes increased as they progressed towards their Belgian Championship success in 2001/02. One of the most skilful members of the Genk midfield, with the Red Devils squad hit by injury, Bernd has been called up for the trip to the Far East.
