As a promising striker, Ben made an early season appearance for Blackburn Rovers in the Worthington Cup Second Round second leg tie against Portsmouth before jetting off to Australia where he joined NSL club Northern Spirit on loan for the remainder of the 2000-01 campaign.
The move was a success and, despite being hampered by niggling injuries, he scored a creditable 16 goals in 26 appearances.
Having tasted regular first-team action, Ben took full advantage of an extended loan to Brentford in 2001-02 as the Bees reached the Division Two Play-Off Final.
Rovers subsequently accepted a £450,000 offer from Stockport County, with a hefty sell-on clause favouring the Ewood Park club.
His subsequent move to Hull City on a three-year contract for £100,0000 was the highest fee paid between Football League clubs on Transfer Deadline Day in 2003.
Ben's contract with the Tigers was extended to June 2007 in May 2005.
He joined Blackpool in August 2006 with a two-year contract that was extended to June 2010 in March 2009.
Ben joined Notts County in July 2010 with a two-year contract before he was made available for transfer in May 2011.
He joined Tranmere Rovers in July 2012 with a two-year contract but he announced his retirement a month later.
