A broken toe kept the Burnley fans' favourite out of action at the start of 2000-01. Once back in the side he was soon into familiar scoring mode, becoming the first Claret to hit a hat-trick as a substitute when he did so in the Worthington Cup victory against Hartlepool. However his well-established striking partnership with Andy Cooke never got into its stride and then when Ian Moore came from Stockport the pair never looked comfortable playing together. Andy was a virtual fixture on the subs' bench for the second half of the season, often coming on too late to make any impact on events, and when Gareth Taylor arrived he was marginalized even more. For all that he remained Burnley's top scorer and he is now approaching the landmark figure of 100 goals for the club he has always supported.
With circumstances not allowing him to commit the necessary time and effort, Andy announced his retirement from football in August 2003.
