A young pretender to the more experienced Jiang Jin this competition may have come to early for him to claim the number one shirt. He plays for Dalian Shade who he joined when he was eighteen and played for China in theWorld Youth Championships played in Argentina. He was drafted into the full side during qualification when Jiang Jin was injured and in the three matches he played he did not concede a goal. He is not a regular for his club side but Bora Mulitinovic sees him as the long-term replacement in goal. He is a good shot stopper but is criticized for not being decisive at claiming crosses. He will be the number two here.
With a view to a possible move to England, An Qi has been invited to train with Newcastle United in December 2002.
Appearances in World Cup qualification: 4.
