One of the best known of the Russian players he has had a long and chequered career. He began at Spartak Moscow in 1986 before leaving to play for Portuguese side Benfica in 1992. He married a local woman and was granted citizenship before the marriage was dissolved but chose to play for Russia making his debut in 1992. He made the 1992 and 1996 European Championship Finals and the 1994 World Cup Finals and is a regular in the team when fit. At club level he moved to France to play for Caen and Strasbourg before moving to Spain and current club Celta Vigo in 1996. He is a talented creative player who showed his versatility in qualification when he played as sweeper and striker for the team. His only failure is his indiscipline, which saw him miss several qualifying matches. He will start here as the fulcrum of the teams play.
