Big Sandy' had a fearsome reputation but, in addition to his competitive nature, was also very versatile. He played in four different midfield and forward positions for United and most outfield positions during his career.
Just one season as a forward with Arsenal before moving to the USA where he was killed in a railway accident in 1914.
