Boksic returned from a self-imposed international exile to ease Croatia into the 2002 World Cup finals, netting the goal that beat Belgium in October. Fondly known as 'The Croat Van Basten', his sublime skills and goalscoring prowess have been a major factor in Middlesbrough maintaining their Premiership status. Signed by former England skipper Bryan Robson for a club record £2.5million in August 2000 after a three-year stint at Lazio, he had cemented his reputation as one of Europe's top strikers in helping the Rome club recover their former glories. That was his second stint at the Stadio Olimpico following a year when he reached the Champions League Final with Juventus. Boksic had served Olympique Marseille and AS Cannes after starting his career with Hajduk Split.
