Alan Smith

After a relatively quiet 1999-2000, Alan Smith had a season to remember in 2000-01.

He began like a house on fire, scoring in both legs of the Champions' League qualifying round with Munich 1860, adding a double in the 2-0 win over Everton and a single in the 2-1 victory at Middlesbrough.

He began to forge a formidable partnership with Mark Viduka and further goals came at regular intervals throughout the campaign.

A striker who is a real team player, he is full of unselfish running and works hard to close down defenders.

He netted several valuable goals in Europe, including the winner against Lazio in the Olympic Stadium after being set up by Viduka's back heel, and an audacious chip in the 4-1 win in Anderlecht.

While his combative style and never-say-die attitude was really appreciated by the Elland Road faithful, they also attracted the attention of referees and his game would clearly have improved if the number of yellow cards he received had been reduced.

Alan was rewarded for a fine season with his first England cap in the friendly against Mexico and retained his place in the squad for the World Cup qualifier in Greece.

Alan joined Manchester United for £7million in May 2004 with a five-year contract.

He took to United like a duck to water, winning over the fans with his all-action style, immense drive and energy combined with considerable skills on the ground and in the air.

He plainly enjoys every second on the pitch.

After a broken leg ended his spell at Manchester United, Alan resurrected his career at Newcastle United where the former striker was largely and effectively used in a midfield role.

Alan joined Newcastle United in August 2007 with a five-year contract.

After a loan spell, he joined Milton Keynes Dons in July 2012 with a two-year contract.

Alan joined Notts County in July 2014 with a one-year contract that was extended to June 2016 in May 2015.
