Adam Matysek

An experienced goalkeeper who was the number one for Poland before the arrival of Jerzy Dudek on the scene. He played at Polish sides Gornik Zabrze and Slask Breslau before moving to Germany to play for second division side Fortuna Koln 1995. He made his international debut while playing for Slask Breslau in December 1991 against Egypt but could not get into the team on a regular basis as Poland had two good keepers in Jaraslow Bako and Josef Wandzik. He to Gutersloh before moving to be back up keeper at Bayer Leverkusen in 1998. Injury to first team keeper Dirk Heinen led to Adam starting the 1998-1999 campaign as first choice and he kept his position throughout the season. He lost the starting position to Hans Jorg Butt at Bayer Leverkusen but still stayed in the national squad. He seriously injured his shoulder in an international match against Norway in March and had to return to Poland to regain his fitness with the Zaglebie team. He had a trial at Shaktar Donetsk before signing for his current club Wolfsburg in April 2001. An excellent steady goalkeeper who has good reflexes and positional sense he is a good back up in this position.
