The Hammers had now kept consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League games for the first time since March 2016. They had now not been involved in a goalless draw in the Premier League since December 2015. Winston Reid scored in the sixth minute of added time in the second half.

League position: 20th Sunderland became the first team to fail to win any of their opening nine games in two Premier League seasons. The Black Cats became only the second team to fail to win any of their opening nine games in consecutive top division seasons (also Bury in 1904-05 and 1905-06). Crystal Palace were now the only other team who had yet to keep a clean sheet so far in this Premier League season.
