Final league position 2016-17: 17th In manager Walter Mazzarri's final game in charge, this was Watford's heaviest home league defeat since a 1-7 loss to Swindon Town in Division Three (South) on 6 September 1951. This result equalled the Hornets' heaviest defeat in the Premier League (0-5 at Wimbledon on 4 December 1999 and 1-6 at Liverpool on 6 November 2016). José Holebas avoided becoming the first player to be shown 15 yellow cards in a Premier League season. Adrian Mariappa failed a late fitness test during the warm-up so, due to the extent of their injury problems, Watford's seven substitutes included two goalkeepers (Rene Gilmartin and Costel Pantilimon). Abdoulaye Doucoure was booked in the first minute of added time in the first-half. Watford manager Walter Mazzarri said: "I want to thank the fans because they were patient. They supported the players on the pitch. It was not easy. Look how many players were missing. When we had the full squad we were seventh, we reached 40 points with six games to go. We were missing six defenders today. This has never happened to me in my whole career. I had a lot of satisfaction in England this year. If there is a team that would make me competitive enough in the league I would consider staying."

Final league position 2016-17: 3rd With a win that confirmed their qualification for the following season's UEFA Champions League, Manchester City had now lost one of their last 17 games in the Premier League. Gabriel Jesus had now scored seven goals in eight starts in the Premier League. Sergio Agüero became the fifth player to score 20 or more goals in three consecutive seasons in the Premier League (also Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Harry Kane). Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said: "I was so happy with this season. We fought in all competitions and the only regret is that we did not fight until the end. We are so glad to be third because every season is tougher and tougher to reach the Champions League. The gap is too big so we need to play better, not work harder, to be closer to Chelsea and Spurs. This is one of the best groups I have coached. It has been a privilege to work with these guys."
