With the country in the grip of a fuel crisis, the 49 gallant fans on the visitors terrace were left with little to cheer as Hartlepool failed to repeat their weekend seaside win at Blackpool. Torquay clinched only their second win of the season when Eifion Williams put Pool to the sword again. Eighteen months earlier, the Wales 'B' striker hit a hat-trick on his Football League debut against the Victoria Park outfit. This time a single strike did the trick when he scored from close range after Tony Bedeau crossed from the left for the outstanding Mick O'Brien to set up the chance. Williams had already had a goal disallowed and his partnership with Bedeau, along with the Gulls slick midfield passing, had Pool on the retreat for long periods. The former Barry Town striker also went close twice midway through the second half as Torquay produced by far the best performance of the season so far.
