Comments:

League position: 18th This was Sunderland's tenth win in the Premier League against Newcastle United; their best record in the competition against any opposition. This was the Black Cats' first win in 13 league games (lost seven); their worst sequence since a 14-match run from November 2009 to March 2010. It was only the third time in the top division that they had gone nine games without a win from the start of the season (also 1969-70 and 1976-77). They scored more than twice in a Premier League game for the first time since a 3-1 win against Crystal Palace on 3 November 2014.

Comments:

League position: 19th This was Newcastle United's Steve McClaren's 200th Premier League game as a manager (won 65 and lost 82). They had now scored only two goals in their last six meetings with Sunderland (all Premier League). United failed in their attempt to win consecutive Premier League games for the first time since November 2014. Fabricio Coloccini was sent-off after 45 minutes for the denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity. However, his subsequent claim for wroingful dismissal was upheld and the red card withdrawn.
