Comments:

League position: 15th Sunderland had now won five successive Premier League matches against Newcastle United which became their longest run of victories in this fixture. They also set a new club record run of seven unbeaten top-flight games against their local rivals. It was the first time they had won consecutive top-flight home games against Newcastle since 1967. In new manager Dick Advocaat's first game at home, this was the Black Cats' second win in their last 14 Premier League matches (four draws and eight defeats). Dick Advocaat maintained the remarkable sequence of the last three Sunderland managers winning a Tyne-Wear derby in the second game of their Black Cats reign. Paolo Di Canio’s second game in charge of Sunderland was a 3-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park in April 2013. Gus Poyet’s second game was a 2-1 win over Newcastle six months later at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland had won just two of their previous 16 Premier League games at the Stadium of Light (drawn seven and lost seven) and failed to score in four of their last five home matches.

League position: 13th This was Newcastle United’s 400th away game in the Premier League. Their only victory against Sunderland in the last nine meetings was at Sunderland on 20 August 2011 with a 1-0 win. The Magpies had now won only once in their last eight Premier League matches (two draws and five defeats). Only Queens Park Rangers (55) had now conceded more goals than United (49) in this Premier League season. Having recovered from testicular cancer, Jonas Gutierrez made his first start in a senior game since August 2013.
