Comments:

League position: 20th Sunderland had now failed to score in five of their last six Premier League games. The Black Cats had now won only one of their last nine Premier League games (lost seven). They had now lost 18 of their 27 games so far in this Premier League season; one more than in the whole of the 2015-16 season when they finished in 17th position. Manager David Moyes said: "We tried to make chances. The one that hits the post and comes out maybe that'll hit the inside of the post and go in next time. "I hope our players understand the position that we're in, but we're not panicking."

League position: 3rd Manchester City equalled their club record of ten away wins in a Premier League season (also 2011-12, 2013-14 and 2014-15). City had now kept clean sheets in each of their last five away games in league and cup. Sergio Agüero became the 21st player to score 50 goals in away games in the Premier League. Manager Pep Guardiola said: "We expected aggression and intensity. It was a very good first goal. It was important to go into half-time one-nil up. If they were winning with the amazing atmosphere it would have been difficult."
