League position: 19th In winning at home in the league for the first time in 2016-17 to move off the bottom of the table, Sunderland had now kept their first Premier League clean sheet of the season. Jermain Defoe scored the 150th goal of his Premier League career to move joint seventh in the competition's all-time goalscorers list along with Michael Owen. Victor Anichebe scored two goals in a Premier League game for the second time in his career (also for Everton against Newcastle United on 30 December 2006). He also scored in consecutive Premier League games for the first time since September 2012.

The Tigers had not now kept a clean sheet in the Premier League since a 2-0 win at Swansea City on 20 August 2016. At 17 years and 181 days, Josh Tymon became the youngest player to make a Premier League appearance for City. He broke the club record held by Mark Cullen (18 years and two days) which was also against Sunderland on 24 April 2010.
