League position: 16th This was Southampton's fifth consecutive game in the Premier League without scoring a goal. This equalled their club record in the top division which was set in April 2001. The Saints had now scored 45 goals in their last 54 games in the Premier League, and scored only one goal in first-half in their ten games so far in this Premier League season. They had now won three of the 18 games in the Premier League under manager Mark Hughes.

League position: 19th Newcastle United had now made their their worst ten-game start to a top division season (lost seven). They also failed to win any of their opening ten games in League Division One in 1898-99 but drew four of them.
